Can I be a writer?

I am really thinking about writing articles for eHow, but can I really be a writer? I really need another source of income. They really have made it easy to write an article they even set up the formula. The real question is can you really make any money at it? If anyone has any suggestions or ideas other than writing for eHow I'm all ears.
